Between the Bay of Somme and the Opal Coast, a cycling experience not to be missed.
Can’t decide between the Bay of Somme and the Opal Coast for your next cycling trip?
This trip has been designed with you in mind! In just 5 days, you’ll enjoy the majestic Bay of Somme as well as the charm of part of the Opale Coast. Leaving from Abbeville, set off for 3 magical days in the heart of one of the most beautiful bays in the world. With towpaths, the banks of the bay on the Vélomaritime, country roads, the seaside, visits to towns and villages with a rich heritage, a crossing of the Crécy forest… the programme for this trip is particularly rich and varied.
With a bit of luck, you might even spot a few seals basking in the sun along the way!
Next, you’ll head for the Pas de Calais. You’ll pass through some magnificent scenery and have the chance to stroll through a number of typical Opal Coast resorts.
Choosing the “Between the Bay of Somme and the Opal Coast” route means choosing a flat, easy route, even if you can sometimes expect a bit of wind. The route, away from busy roads, is ideal for a first cycle tour!
Finally, on the last day, you’ll return to Abbeville station by train at the end of the day.

Day 1:
The route starts outside Abbeville station, so you can arrive by train or car. If you have chosen the bicycle option, they will be dropped off in front of the station for optimum comfort!
The first few kilometres take you through the stunning town of Abbeville and its parks, before heading off along the Vallée de Somme cycle route along the canalised Somme.
Then you reach the banks of the Bay and are on La Vélomaritime. Spend as much time as you like in the charming medieval town of Saint Valéry sur Somme.
In the second half of the day, you ride through the much wilder part of the bay, towards the Pointe du Hourdel. If you’re lucky, you may catch a glimpse of the seals and calves that have been re-colonising the bay for some thirty years now.
At the end of the day, you return to Saint Valéry to spend your first night, passing through the countryside inland.
Day 2:
On the second day, you will leave Saint Valéry via the very pretty marina, and cycle around the Bay for several kilometres, still on La Vélomaritime. Keep your eyes peeled for one of the impressive flocks of sheep in the heart of the Bay.
You then leave the Bay to head north along country roads and discover the beautiful hinterland. You then reach the town of Rue, with its rich heritage: the belfry has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005, and the Chapel of the Holy Spirit is typical of flamboyant Gothic art.
In the second half of the route, you return to the Bay and discover the magnificent panorama of the Crotoy marshes, teeming with animal and plant species of all kinds: you’ll no doubt see a few Scottish cows living there with their hooves in the water!
To round off your day, you arrive in Le Crotoy, a seaside town with a fine sandy beach facing due south! You’ll be spending two nights here.
Day 3:
On this third day of the trip, you ride along the banks of the Bay before heading further north towards the Forêt de Crécy. The setting is very different from the first 2 days, as you pass through a forest of over 10,000 acres and drive on roads that are a little more undulating than on the first 2 days.
On the way out of the forest, the route takes you through small historic villages, where you can admire the many curiosities of the area: dovecotes, a remarkable oak tree, a 12th-century church and several 18th- and 19th-century castles.
To finish day 3, you return to Le Crotoy, where you spend your second evening.
Day 4:
On this fourth day of adventure, you resume your route on La Vélomaritime towards the endless beaches and wild landscapes of the Opal Coast. You can stop off at the Parc du Marquenterre, a must for birdwatchers, whose behaviour can be observed here at any time of year.
You’ll pass through Quend-Plage and Fort-Mahon-Plage, two seaside resorts that combine family charm with vast stretches of fine sand. Take a moment to admire the dunes that line these beaches, so popular with water sports enthusiasts.
You then continue on towards the Pas de Calais to Berck-Plage. This seaside resort, famous for its sand yachts, kites and vast beaches, is the ideal place for a late afternoon break. Depending on the tide, you may be able to see seals basking on the sandbanks.
You spend the night in Berck, in this typical seaside atmosphere.
Day 5 :
For this final day, you set off from Berck-Plage and continue to follow La Vélomaritime, which takes you through the varied landscapes of the Côte d’Opale. You’ll pass through Merlimont and Merlimont-Plage, two peaceful spots perfect for a break or a stroll on the beach.
Then on to Le Touquet-Paris-Plage, nicknamed “the pearl of the Opal Coast”. This chic, dynamic seaside resort offers a unique atmosphere with its characterful villas, lively beaches and pine forests. Take the opportunity to stroll through the centre or along the seafront.
At the end of the day, you reach Étaples, a charming port town nestling on the banks of the Canche. This marks the end of your journey. Don’t miss the marina! A final moment of relaxation by the water before catching the train back to Abbeville.
