Cycling in the Avesnois, a real break from it all!
With this ‘Weekend in Avesnois’ cycling tour, you’ll fill up on nature and energy in this beautiful hilly region, between hedged farmland and forests.
It’s the perfect way to unwind in the heart of the Avesnois Regional Nature Park! Expect to be a bit sporty because of the difference in altitude. Of course, an electrically-assisted bike is recommended for this trip, but with a bit of training, you’ll easily conquer the climbs, even with a muscle bike!

Day 1:
You begin your journey with a stroll through Maubeuge, a town that has preserved the vestiges of its rich past. After a few kilometres in the town, you head south on a stretch of Eurovélo 3. This cycle route, also known as the Scandibérique in France, runs from Trondheim in Norway to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. Between Maubeuge and Willies, this section is actually a former railway line… so the route is relatively flat on this stretch!
On this first day, you can make a diversion to the Musée du Verre in Sars Poterie, if you feel like it!
Day 2:
On this second day, you’ll cross the Avesnois from east to west, following its roads and country lanes, crossing meadows, marshes, ponds, etc. In some villages, you’ll be able to admire the dance kiosks, an unusual feature of the Avesnois. These kiosks appeared between the end of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th, at a time when music had become a popular pastime in its own right.
At the end of the day, you reach the inevitable Maroilles, where your accommodation awaits. The route will take you past the Moulin de l’Abbaye, a symbolic monument of the Avesnoise region.
Day 3:
Leaving Maroilles on the third day, you’ll discover a new landscape, as you drive through part of the Mormal state forest.
At 9,163 hectares, it’s the largest forest in the Nord département. If you’re lucky, you might come face to face with a stag or a roe deer… so keep your eyes peeled!
You then finish your journey by passing through the north of the forest, reaching Maubeuge at the end of the day.
On this trip, you’ll enjoy bike-friendly accommodation, including breakfast, so you can rest easy.

Each home has a solution for keeping your bike safe and protected.
