During this tour, you’ll combine the joy of cycling with the discovery of places deeply marked by the history of the 20th century.
Over 3 days and 2 nights, you’ll explore some of the most symbolic and moving sites of World War I.
You’ll also enjoy your time in Arras, the capital of the Pas-de-Calais, with the chance to climb the Belfry and visit the famous Boves, a fascinating network of underground chalk quarries.
The cycling route will take you on a journey of nearly 100 km through the heart of the Pays d’Artois, between plains and rolling hills — a rich and full itinerary designed to help you experience the very best of this remarkable region.
This tour was developed in collaboration with Arras Pays d’Artois Tourisme.

Day 1:
Spend your first day in Arras, the capital of the Pas-de-Calais department. Take the time to explore the city and its two stunning squares: Grand’ Place and Place des Héros.
In the afternoon, climb to the top of the Belfry for a panoramic view of Artois and the Mining Basin. Just a few minutes later, step beneath Place des Héros — a whole new atmosphere awaits you with a visit to the Boves, former chalk quarries forming a fascinating underground labyrinth.
For this first evening, dinner is included in your stay.
Day 2:
Today marks the start of your cycling adventure. You leave Arras and head north of the city. From the very first kilometers, you’ll be riding across the lands where the Battle of Arras took place in the spring of 1917. You follow the line of the former front, passing several sites of remembrance, such as the impressive La Targette Cemetery (French and British) in Neuville-Saint-Vaast. You will also cycle past the British cemeteries of Saint-Nicolas and Sainte-Catherine.
After crossing the Vimy state forest, you arrive at one of the most striking World War I memorial sites: the Canadian National Vimy Memorial. This memorial bears the names of Canadian soldiers who died in France and have no known grave. It stands on the site of Canada’s historic victory during the Battle of Vimy Ridge. Here, you are officially on Canadian soil!
Shortly after, you will reach the Notre-Dame-de-Lorette National Cemetery. The largest military cemetery in France, it is the final resting place of 42,000 soldiers who died on the Artois and Belgian-French Flanders fronts.
You will end your day cycling back down to Arras, passing by the ruins of the Mont-Saint-Éloi Abbey.
Day 3:
Your third day is just as rich in experiences as the previous ones. After a few kilometers of cycling, you will arrive at the Wellington Quarry — an impressive network of underground barracks. It was here that the largest surprise attack of World War I was launched. A guided tour of the site is scheduled for the morning.
You’ll then continue your ride past Beaurains Cemetery and through the site of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Leaving the city behind, you’ll head for new hills. Throughout your route, you’ll be amazed by the breathtaking views over the rolling hills of Artois. You’ll also be charmed by the small village of Monchy-le-Preux, and by the delightful kilometers spent cycling along the canalized Scarpe River — riding along its towpath is a real pleasure.
This side of Arras is also home to many remembrance sites: in Monchy-le-Preux, Athies, and Saint-Laurent-Blangy.
Your stay concludes at the end of the day back on Place des Héros, in Arras.
You’ll stay right in the heart of Arras, just a 5-minute walk from the train station.
During this tour, you’ll enjoy all the comfort of a 4-star hotel for two nights.
Naturally, secure and sheltered storage is provided for your bicycle overnight.
