Follow the peaceful Somme Valley Cycle Route (V30) from Ham all the way to the Bay of Somme on a gentle, immersive journey through a region rich in nature and history. From towns to villages, you’ll enjoy a route that runs almost entirely along traffic-free greenways, passing unspoilt landscapes, quiet canals and poignant heritage sites.

The itinerary leads you to Péronne, Corbie and then Amiens, where you can explore the highlights of the “Capital of the Somme”: the floating gardens (Hortillonnages), the magnificent cathedral and the historic quarters. A worthwhile detour also takes you to the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux and the Sir John Monash Centre. The journey then continues towards Abbeville before reaching the Bay of Somme, with a final stop in Le Crotoy.

A wonderful crossing of the Somme, accessible, refreshing and full of contrasts, perfect for those who enjoy cycling at the gentle rhythm of the water and wide open landscapes, crowned with a truly spectacular finale.

Carte Google earth du parcours de la Véloroute de la Vallée de la Somme

Day 1 : From Ham to Péronne

Your adventure begins in Ham, at the foot of its imposing château, which has watched over the town for centuries. Very soon, the route leaves the town behind to join the Canal du Nord near Buverchy – a gentle warm-up along a still little-known waterway – before reconnecting a few kilometres later with the canalised River Somme, the guiding thread of your journey.

This first stage is dotted with numerous locks, offering lovely views of former lock-keepers’ houses and, at times, impressive barges gliding silently along the water. It’s the perfect introduction, allowing you to settle into the peaceful atmosphere of the valley.

You arrive in Péronne, a town deeply marked by history, where you can enjoy the end of the day beside the Étang du Cam or strolling around the château.

Day 2 : From Péronne to Corbie

The day begins perfectly with a visit to the Historial of the Great War, a fascinating museum and memorial housed within the Château de Péronne.

You then rejoin the cycle route for a splendid stage through the Somme at its wildest: marshlands, wet meadows, waterways and migratory birds… here, nature truly reigns supreme.

Be sure not to miss the charming village of Frise, picture-postcard perfect, with its belvedere offering panoramic views over the winding valley below.

An optional detour leads you through the marshes to the Château de Suzanne, set within a lush green haven. Along the way, you may even spot an authentic heritage train at Froissy — well worth a stop, as there is a surprisingly impressive museum on site.

Your day ends in Corbie, dominated by its magnificent Saint-Pierre Abbey Church, an architectural gem not to be missed.

Day 3 : From Corbie to Amiens (via Villers-Bretonneux)

Now for one of the highlights of your trip!

You leave the cycle route for a short while to climb up to the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, an ascent you may prefer to do on foot if you wish. At the top, the panoramic views over the plains of the Somme are truly striking. The modern and immersive Sir John Monash Centre perfectly complements the visit.

You then rejoin the Somme Valley Cycle Route and continue on to Amiens, the department’s capital, where the route guides you to the city’s must-see sights: the unique floating gardens (Hortillonnages), the majestic Notre-Dame Cathedral, the colourful lanes and waterside terraces of the Saint-Leu district, and even the Jules Verne House, where the writer lived at the end of the 19th century.

Your accommodation is set in the heart of the hortillonnages (subject to availability): a truly magical interlude.

Day 4 : From Amiens to Abbeville

You resume your journey along the cycle route for a pleasant leg, passing through open landscapes, the meanders of the Somme River, and charming riverside villages.

After a few kilometers, you can take a short detour to Samara, a natural and archaeological park, a true living showcase of the department’s rich archaeological heritage. Along the way, don’t miss the magnificent Château de Long, elegant and perfectly situated on the riverbank. You’ll also see the ruins of Pont-Rémy, an intriguing industrial site reclaimed by nature.

Arriving in Abbeville marks your return to the city, where you can admire the old belfry, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, or stroll through the Parc d’Emonville, a veritable urban oasis.

Day 5 : From Abbeville to Le Crotoy

Head towards the sea!

You’ll continue following the canalized Somme River, through a landscape that gradually opens up to the vast open spaces of the estuary. Arriving in Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, a charming medieval town perched on its promontory, is a highlight, with its ramparts, colorful houses, and maritime atmosphere. All that remains is to skirt the bay to reach Le Crotoy, a peaceful seaside resort that will be your final stop. Here, the village faces due south onto the immense bay: a guaranteed sunset on a clear day!

During this part of the journey, you might spot seals and harbor seals in the bay. It’s often a moving experience, but please keep your distance: it is essential never to approach within 300 meters of this protected species.

Day 6 : From Le Crotoy to Noyelles-sur-Mer

The final leg, just a few kilometers, takes you to Noyelles-sur-Mer train station where you’ll catch your train later that day. If you’ve rented bikes, this is where you’ll return them. Otherwise, you can take your bikes on the train.

For this trip, you will enjoy comfortable bed and breakfasts, hotels, or inns, with breakfast included, for a relaxing and peaceful stay. Accommodations are located near restaurants for dinner (not included).
